Facts vs. Commitments: Indonesia's Obstacles to Welcoming the Realization of Net Zero Emission 2060 Amid the Construction of the Suralaya PLTU

Abstract
The worsening climate change poses a significant challenge for countries around the world, including Indonesia. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and increased frequency of natural disasters threaten environmental sustainability and the well-being of communities. This paper aims to explore the current state of climate change in Indonesia and the government’s efforts to achieve the Net Zero Emission target by 2060, as well as the impact of the Suralaya Coal-Fired Power Plant (PLTU). This research employs a normative-empirical method to analyze existing policies and regulations, as well as empirical data related to carbon emissions from the Suralaya power plant, which operates using coal. The results indicate that despite various initiatives, the negative impact of the Suralaya power plant on carbon emissions requires serious attention. Stricter enforcement of regulations and a transition to renewable energy should be prioritized to achieve sustainability targets and reduce the risks posed by climate change.
