Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health concern in Indonesia, and its treatment using anti-tuberculosis drugs (ATDs) may cause hepatotoxicity, potentially affecting liver function. Monitoring liver function is therefore essential to identify possible adverse effects during ATD therapy. This study aimed to evaluate liver function in pulmonary tuberculosis patients undergoing ATD therapy at Pasar Rebo Regional General Hospital and to analyze the associations between patients' age, gender, and liver function parameters. This research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional and retrospective approach using medical record data from 136 pulmonary tuberculosis patients selected through a total sampling technique. Liver function was assessed based on serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST/SGOT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT/SGPT), and bilirubin. The data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test to determine the statistical associations between demographic characteristics and liver function parameters. The results showed that most respondents were young adults aged 18–40 years (37.5%) and male (60.3%). Regarding liver function, 59.6% of patients had normal AST levels, 76.5% had normal ALT levels, and 50.7% had normal bilirubin levels. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between age and AST (p = 0.029), ALT (p = 0.004), and bilirubin levels (p = 0.028). Gender was also significantly associated with AST (p = 0.028) and ALT levels (p = 0.000), but not with bilirubin levels (p = 0.889). These findings indicate that age and gender are important demographic factors associated with variations in liver function among pulmonary tuberculosis patients receiving ATD therapy. Therefore, regular monitoring of liver function, particularly through AST, ALT, and bilirubin examinations, is recommended to support the early detection of potential hepatotoxicity and improve the safety of tuberculosis treatment.
